Volunteer Opportunities

When organizations need board members or have other volunteer opportunities, they often look to the alumni of Leadership Rockland first to fill those needs. Please read the information from Paul Trader below, and then you can select any of the links to find additional information about the organizations and their current needs.

Dear Leadership Rockland Alumnus:

In an effort to utilize your leadership skills in our Rockland community, we are writing to ask if you would be willing to volunteer or serve on a Board of Directors of a local non-profit organization. To facilitate the process of finding an interested non-profit organization, Paul Trader, Chair of the Institute for Non-profits at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Rockland has asked each non-profit organization to submit a request for such assistance. Attached, please find those requests for volunteers and Board members from nine organizations including:

1. Please review each of the attached forms that the organizations have prepared, telling you about their mission, outreach and need for volunteers/Board members. Visit their websites to learn more about the organization.

2. If any one in particular interests you, simply contact the Contact Person named on the form to arrange a time to talk, meet or visit the organization.

Earl Miller Inducted into Civil Rights Hall of Fame

Earl_MillerEarl Miller, (Leadership Rockland Class of 2007) Executive Director of Community Relations for Nyack College, was inducted into the Rockland County Civil/Human Rights Hall of Fame on April 8, 2015.

Born and raised in Atlanta, GA, a hub of the Civil Rights Movement, Miller has served residents of Rockland County through his participation in a number of County organizations. He now plays the role of coordinator of the program’s multicultural community day, as well as serving on the organization’s Board of Directors. A former Nyack Rotary president (2012-2013), he has been a board member of several organizations including Rockland County Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Nyack Center, the African American Historical Society of Rockland, and Head Start of Rockland. He is also Board of Directors Vice President for the New York State YMCA Foundation.

As a Nyack Rotary member, he has helped deliver food to recipients of Meals On Wheels, has visited classrooms at a local elementary school under the literacy reading program, and has participated in Junior Achievement programs and food drives.

Several organizations in the county have saluted Miller for his work, among them the Nyack Branch of the NAACP in 2010. He received the Nyack College Commitment to Mission award for a staff member in 2013.

Earl Miller has been a featured speaker at numerous County events including “Civil Rights: The Last 100 Years,” at SUNY Rockland Community College; Martin Luther King Day guest speaker at Suffern United Methodist Church in Suffern and Pilgrim Baptist Church in Nyack, and the Rockland Holocaust Museum and Study Center’s Kristallnacht Commemoration.

Thursday, January 15, 2015 is Leadership Rockland Day

Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski (D-New City) presented Leadership Rockland with a New York State Assembly Proclamation today commending their 25 years of service—and declared every third Thursday of January as “Leadership Rockland Day”.

A vital resource for the community, Leadership Rockland offers existing and emerging leaders an educational experience focused on the infrastructure of Rockland County, New York – presented by leaders in government, business and non-profit sectors. With 600 graduates over a 25-year span, the program consists of 11 daylong sessions over a 10-month period, and engages and challenges its participants to examine issues and seek solutions, Zebrowski said in a press release.

“I am proud to honor Leadership Rockland with this proclamation as they celebrate 25 years of exceptional service and dedication to the county. They continue to enrich and be a vital resource for Rockland, creating our leaders for tomorrow,” Zebrowski said.

Leadership Rockland’s topics include Leadership Skills; Historical Rockland; Environment; Multicultural Communities; Education & Developing Human Capital; Economic Development; Criminal Justice & Public Safety; Healthcare & Emergency Services; Art, Culture, Media and Communications; Politics & Public Policy; and Making an Impact.

“Our goal is to attract and nurture exceptional leaders and to provide opportunities and structure for a continuum of professional development activity which will enhance their knowledge of Rockland County,” said Jan Degenshein, Chairman of the Leadership Rockland Board of Directors.
